Roots of Herbalism is intended as an introduction for those who wish to help themselves and their families achieve radiant wellbeing through natural health. It is a practical course well-suited for laypeople and health professionals alike.

The course seeks to marry ancient traditions with the scientific context of our modern world. Our goal is to reclaim our herbal heritage and empower students to apply these teachings for optimum wellbeing in balance with today's society. We focus our study on plants which are common in the Native North American and Western European traditions, which grow native or can be easily cultivated in Florida.

Roots of Herbalism is the prerequisite course to our Family Herbalist Certification, an educational program which empowers students to serve as primary health providers for their family and friends using natural methods. This program is prerequisite to our professional training, the Community Herbalist Certification Program, intended for those wishing to integrate these teachings into a professional or clinical setting.

About the Instructor

Emily Ruff, Director of Education for the Florida School of Holistic Living, is a community herbalist and health educator who has practiced the art and science of plant healing for over a decade. Her studies have taken her around three continents, where she has studied under indigenous healers of many traditions.

Ms. Ruff inherits a strong background in gardening and botany from her family, including several generations of small farmers and botanists. She completed apprenticeships with Rosemary Gladstar and George D'Arcy, studied ethnobotany at the University of Central Florida, and studied flower essences extensively with the Bach Foundation. Her work has also taken her to the woods of Central Florida, where she lived off the grid and applied the principles of holistic living in an extensive experiential research setting.

Emily is an international speaker and is currently serving her local community as a board member of Slow Food Orlando.  She has dedicated much of her work to preserving medicinal plants and their eco-systems as a member of United Plant Savers, and her recent work focuses on biodynamics, bioregionalism, and biorhythmic-influenced cultivation and healing.  She is past-president of the Herb Society of Central Florida, and is a published author whose writing is frequently found in regional publications.  She is recognized by membership in several professional organizations in the herbalism and holistic health field, and lectures throughout Florida to groups, organizations, garden clubs, and schools.

For many years, I longed for a chance to deepen my knowledge of Herbs, but finding a place I felt comfortable doing so proved to be a challenge. Then one day I had a chance to listen to Emily speak about health and sustainability, and realized just how much knowledge she was willing to offer us. Upon meeting her she was gracious enough to welcome me into the school and her kind nature let me know that she was happy to guide me along my journey. I firmly believe taking herbal classes was the best decision I have ever made. In all my schooling, Emily is the most helpful, assertive teacher/Mentor I have ever had and I truly feel blessed to have been able to have such a wonderful guide on my path of all things holistic and herbal. She has left me with enough knowledge and confidence to pursue my career as a holistic healer. ~ Shannon Lockhart, Community Herbalist Graduate
