Classes at the Florida School of Holistic Living offer hands on education to empower individuals towards greater health and wholeness through tools and traditions of our ancestors.

Classes are intended for people of all levels of experience and all walks of life.  No previous experience is required for most of our classes, and all are intended to help lay individuals support greater quality of life for themselves, their families, and their communities, by instilling a connection with the natural world and our inherent power.

Categories of Classes

Our curriculum is organized into the following categories:

+ Herbalism – The foundation of our curriculum is our herbal education, focusing on hands-on nature-based plant medicine education.  This category is further organized into:
Core Curriculum (see below)
Workshops – open to the general public at all levels of experience
Wild Weeds Herb Walks – tours of local natural lands to meet the plants live and in person

+ Holistic Living: In the Garden – A relationship with the earth around us is one of the best medicines there is.  Classes in this section help you learn about permaculture, organic gardening, propagation, pest control, natural building, composting, and the remediation of land as a tool for healing ourselves and our community

Holistic Living: In the Kitchen – Once upon a time, our kitchen was the center of family life, and each meal was prepared with reverence for the energy and beings who made our nourishment popular.  As homecooked meals have been replaced with drive-thru combos, we have seen chronic illness rise alongside obesity and malnutrition.  Return to the ways of our ancestors to find that food really is our medicine.  Classes in this section help you learn about nourishment and preparing traditional foods, and include Vegetarian Nutrition, Kombucha 101,

Holistic Living: Mind/Body/Spirit – Incorporating energetic, spiritual, and physical healing modalities allows us to connect our head, heart, and the ground beneath our feet, and remind us of simple ways to find our center, especially in the middle of a stressful urban environment.  Classes in this section include Reiki, Movement as Medicine, Creative Arts, and Spiritual practices.

We also offer Community Events, such as film screenings and our Moon Circles, which are open to the public.

Visit our Calendar of Classes to see these events and programs, with color coding by category, or visit our Categories page to see them listed by category.

Herbalism Curriculum - from Roots through Professional Herbalist Training

Our Herbalism Program offers courses for those interested in exploring herbalism; for those wishing to gather the information to care for their families naturally; and for those wishing to pursue herbalism in a professional setting.

The health of our planet, of our communities, and of our bodies are inextricably connected.   At FSHL, we approach Herbalism from an ecological perspective, cultivating a sustainable practice that focuses on medicinal plants of our bioregion. We study Western Herbalism with an emphasis on traditions indigenous to this continent, and look to eastern traditions, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, to deepen our study. We believe in a hands-on approach to learning, and work with the plants themselves, dried herbs, and herbal preparations to build our knowledge. We explore Herbalism holistically, recognizing that nutrition, exercise, stress management, and other holistic modalities offer us a full experience of health. We encourage our students to integrate their study into a personal practice, so they can benefit daily and master the material through first-hand experience.

Our Roots of Herbalism course is an immersive introduction that introduces herbalism to both experienced and lay people alike.  It is an excellent course for those wishing to gain a comprehensive introduction to herbalism, and empowers students with the knowledge, tools, and experience to continue their journey to natural, radiant wellbeing.

Roots of Herbalism is the prerequisite course for our Family Herbalist program.  This program is a thirty module course that empowers students to care for the everyday health imbalances they face as a family caretaker.  It is an excellent program for those wishing to care for their children, their parents, and themselves fully and independently.  We believe in preparing students to live in sustainable health.  The modules provide students with a strong, comprehensive herbal education, covering over 200 herbs, herb cultivation, anatomy and physiology, alternative health modalities, plant chemistry and botany, nutrition, detoxification, medicinal formulation, and a wide spectrum of herbal preparations and herbal medicine-making.  Students who graduate from this Certification program enter the world prepared to care for their families health through safe, natural, preventative, healing, and balancing avenues.

Completion of the Family Herbalist is the prerequisite for entering our Community Herbalist program.  The Community Herbalist program is tailored to individuals who wish to continue their herbal education, and is especially suited to those who wish to use herbalism in a professional setting, whether it is education, consultation, or integrating herbalism into an existing health profession.

The Community Herbalist program is a focused program with small, individualized groups for study and practicum.  Students explore their niche in the herbal world through deepening their experience in cultivation, consultation, education, and preparations.  Students work one-on-one with professional herbalists to explore the intricacies of the field and to find their heart’s calling and their path.  Students engage with the community in our Herbal Clinic.  The Community Herbalist program empowers students who complete the program to integrate their knowledge of and experience in herbalism into a professional setting.

Community Herbalist graduates are invited into our Professional Herbalist Mentorship Program by application.  This program is structured as a single-student, mentor-based apprenticeship, tailored to the educational goals of each student.  This program is self-paced, and is based in clinical practicum and also includes cultivation and preparation experience, teaching hours, and published written assignments.

We also offer a Roots Roundtable monthly gathering as an open forum for our Roots class graduates to reconnect, share, ask questions, and continue their journey in the herbal world, outside of our formal programs.  These fun, insightful, and educational gatherings are a great opportunity to reconnect with old classmates and meet new friends while enriching your personal herbal practice.

In the United States, an herbalist is a self-defined professional.  Graduates have found work as herbal consultants for product companies, gardening, launching an herbal product company, teaching herbal workshops, and seeing clients for health consultations.  Our school provides guidance and resources to help our graduates succeed in an herbal profession.  Demand is steadily increasing across the country for skilled and knowledgeable herbalists.

Successful completion of each program including required class hours and assignments will earn the student a certificate of completion.  At the present time, there is no national or state system of licensure or certification for herbalists.  We use the standards of the American Herbalists Guild to inform our curriculum, which are found at  The educational objectives met with successful completion of our certification programs exceed their criteria.  More information on all of our programs is available upon request.

Distance Learning

We began offering Distance Learning programs in Spring 2012 on the request of interested students who could not travel to the Orlando area and did not have a community herbalist offering education in their area.

Currently, we offer our popular Roots of Herbalism as a Home Study Course featuring a DVD, book, and herbal materials.

In Spring 2019, we will offer our Flower Essences Five Week Course via video class for out of town participants.
